CLEVELAND, Ohio— After losing Games 1 and 2, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Indiana Pacers 126-104 Friday night at the the Gamebridge Fieldhouse arena in downtown Indianapolis, winning Game 3 of Round 2 of the 2025 Eastern Conference playoffs, a best-of-seven-games series leading up to their quest to win the Conference Finals and, ultimately, the NBA Finals.

The NBA playoffs are presented by Google, an Internet giant, and one of the BIG Four tech companies.

The No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, Cleveland outdid the Miami Heat with a four-game sweep in Round 1, but struggled in Games 1 and 2 of Round 2 against the Pacers, the series now 2-1, Pacers, after Cleveland's most-needed win on Friday.

The Cavs led throughout the game, with key players Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and DeAndre Hunter returning for Game 3 after being sidelined for Game 2 due to injuries. All five starters for the Cavs (Garland, Mobley, Allen, Strus, and Mitchell) were in double digits by halftime, where Cleveland led by 18 points. The lead increased to 25 points in the fourth quarter with 4:00 minutes to go, but in the end, the Pacers still lost.

Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell carried the Cavs in Games 1 and 2, both offensively and defensively, and scored 36 points Friday night, followed by Evan Mobley with 18, and Darius Garland and DeAndre Hunter with 10 points apiece.

Game  4 is Sun., May 11 in Indianapolis.

Led by head coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavaliers have their eyes on the NBA Championship trophy, and so do Cleveland fans, Cleveland a largely Black major American city and the second largest city in Ohio, behind Columbus, the state capital.

Cleveland has not won an NBA championship since 2016, when megastar LeBron James, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, was a team member.

CLEVELAND, Ohio— After losing Games 1 on Sunday, the Cleveland Cavaliers fail to the Indiana Pacers 120-119 Tuesday night at the the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse arena in downtown Cleveland and lost Game 2 of Round 2 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Playoffs, a best-of-seven-games series leading up to their quest to win the Conference Finals and, ultimately, the NBA Finals.

The Cavs led throughout the game, primarily, and by as much as 14 points during the first quarter. But they could not hold off the Pacers overall, losing in a fourth-quarter stunner by one point. Key Cavs players Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and DeAndre Hunter were sidelined with injuries, which did not help, particularly the absence of Mobley, who was instrumental relative to their Round 1 four-game sweep against the Miami Heat.

CLEVELANDURBANNEWS.COM, LOUISVILLE, Kentucky-Thousands of Derby fans gathered at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday with post time for the 151st Derby at 7pm.

Ridden by jockey Jurior Alvarado, Sovereignty won the 151th running of the Kentucky Derby on a muddy racetrack, winning the first leg of the coveted Triple Crown.

The Bill Mott-trained horse won with a time of 2:02.31 after closing at 7-1 odds, with race favorite Journalism placing and late entry Baeza showing.

"I want to thank my lord Jesus for giving me this Derby win," jockey Alvarado, a Venezuelan immigrant, told reporters after winning his first Derby, with Mott adding that "it's great, and I think it will probably take a while to sink in."

The outspoken jockey is also somewhat of an activist, having stated previously and since President Donald Trump took office for a second term in January, that "the opportunities that are getting denied are heartbreaking."

He knows jockeys in limbo with their immigration status, he has said.

The 19 horses that took to the racetrack for a two-and-a-half-mile run competed for a winning purse of $3.1 million, which went to first-place winner Sovereignty and its owner, Godolphin. The total purse was $5 million, like last year, and the top five horses received payouts, including $1 million for second place, $500,000 for third, $250,000 for fourth, and $150,000 for fifth place.

Journalism, an odds-favorite at (3-1), had to settle for second place, and Beta third, with the trio battling it out as Sovereignty crossed the finish line first before a roaring crowd of spectators.

This year's race was not controversial like the Derby two years ago, where some 12 horses died weeks leading up to the race, upsetting PETA, which demanded an explanation for the fiasco from Derby officials.

A $2 bet on Sovereignty to win paid out $17.96, with payouts of $48.32 for an exacta, $231.12 for a trifecta and $1,682.27 for a superfecta on a $1 bet.

The 2025 Kentucky Derby had an official attendance of 147,406 at Churchill Downs. This is slightly below the previous year's attendance of approximately 156,700 and the record attendance of around 170,500 set in 2015, before the pandemic that swept the nation in 2020 and crippled Derby attendance for two years thereafter.

If Sovereignty wins the Preakness on May 14 in Baltimore and subsequently the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the second and third legs of the Triple Crown, respectively, he will have won the Triple Crown, more recently behind American Pharoah in 2015, Justify in 2018, Affirmed in 1978, Seattle Slew in 1977, and Secretariat in 1973.

East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King's public corruption trial delayed amid claims of judicial bias and prejudice against Cuyahoga County Judge Hollie Gallagher as activists seek a consent decree for common pleas court reforms with the county and the US DOJ

Suspended East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio- The public corruption trial of suspended East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King, who is Black, has been delayed amid claims of bias and prejudice by the presiding judge over the case, Hollie Gallagher, one of 34 largely White judges in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas general division court.

King's Black defense attorney, Charles Tyler, filed an affidavit of disqualification against Gallagher with a trial date originally set for this week, seeking her removal from the case. It, via an amended filing, awaits a determination by Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy on the matter. Per state law, Kennedy, as chief justice, has the authority to remove lower court judges in Ohio from cases for conflict or bias, or other reasons, including municipal, common pleas and state appellate court judges. She has put King's case on hold temporarily.

Affidavits of prejudice must be notarized and filed at least seven days prior to the next scheduled hearing as outlined in Ohio Revised Code Section 2701.031. If so, the case is automatically put on hold pending the outcome of the affidavit. Most judges, however, retaliate against the affiant if possible, and if not, the judge who succeeds them in cases of removal usually does it for them. All of it is unguarded public corruption, sources say.

King, 57, was the city’s mayor since 2016. He was indicted in late October on 12 counts, including theft in office, unlawful interest in a public contract and soliciting or receiving improper compensation. In short, prosecutors say he steered monies to family members, friends, and former councilman Ernest Smith, who is Black like King and has also been indicted and pleaded not guilty, as did King.

King was later suspended with pay by the Ohio Supreme Court at the urging of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley, whom critics say is out to criminalize Black, male elected officials one by one, and any outspoken Black community activists he can railroad into prison with help from crooked and racist judges.

White elected officials get a free pass from O'Malley, sources say, including some common pleas judges who routinely falsify documents, tamper with records, and in some cases help prosecutors and the office of the county clerk fix indictments against Blacks when White cops want them falsely imprisoned.

Also via state law, O'Malley represents these judges when appeals, affidavits of prejudice and writs are filed against them in higher courts, an arrangement, says sources, that gives him more leeway in getting erroneous and unconstitutional convictions with judicial help, a disproportionate number of those prosecuted of whom are Black and of Cleveland, the largest city in the county and a majority Black city. East Cleveland is a neighboring and impoverished city of some 14,000 people, and one of the poorest in the nation.

Gallagher is a bully, according to the sworn affidavit, and she says she can do as she pleases because she is a judge. She is also accused of berating King's attorney in a hearing before mainstream media, after he moved to dismiss some of the charges against his client, an indication, said sources, that defense attorneys who try to properly defend their Black clients are the targets of judges and O'Malley's office. And data show that indigent defense counsel usually do what the judges and prosecutors seek behind closed doors, including chief Cuyahoga County Public Defender Cullen Sweeney, a wannabe judge who unsuccessfully sought a judgeship in 2012. He has said that judges can do whatever they want to do to Black indigent defendants, with the support from his office.

Likewise, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronanye has said that he too will do nothing when White judges deny indigent Blacks counsel because they will not take illegal plea deals or if they speak out against racism and public corruption, and when the public defender's office refuses to represent them.

King and his supporters say the prosecution is politically motivated, while his opponents say it's long overdue.

At one time the presiding and administrative judge of the general division common pleas courts in Ohio had the authority to determine any such removal of municipal or common pleas judges from cases, but the state legislature, with lobbying from Black Cleveland activists and some Cleveland NAACP affiliates, amended the law to give that authority to the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

Activists had claimed that then presiding and administrative judge Joe Russo, chosen by his judicial colleagues to be chief judge of Cuyahoga's general division common pleas bench, is blatantly corrupt and covered up public corruption by other judges, including the arbitrary denial of affidavits of disqualification, regardless of the merits.

Russo has since been replaced as chief judge by Judge Brendan Sheehan, who is not as bad as Russo, sources say and research reveals. But an overhaul of the Cuyahoga County general division common pleas court is still needed, critics say.

Activists are calling for a consent decree for court reforms with the U.S. Department of Justice and Cuyahoga County, one similar to the consent decree for police reforms that remains pending in Cleveland behind police misconduct, and unprecedented murders of Blacks by Cleveland police like 12-year-old Tamir Rice and a host of others.
