COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican seeking reelection this year,  has ordered the state Commerce Department to stop the purchase and sale of all vodka made by a Russian-owned company following Russia's attack on Ukraine earlier this week.

The order is applicable to products sold under the names Green Mark Vodka and Russian Standard Vodka and made by Russian Standard, the only Russian-owned vodka sold in the state, DeWine said in a news release.

Exactly what penalty the governor or state officials plan to legally impose for liquor venues and buyers in Ohio who violate the unprecedented order remains to be seen, though it is clear that Ohio's governor, also a former U.S. senator and state attorney general, has sided with Ukraine relative to heightened conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russo-Ukrainian War is an ongoing war primarily involving Russia, Belarus, and pro-Russian forces on one side, and Ukraine on the other. Armed conflict began in February 2014 in the wake of Euromaidan, centred on the status of Crimea and parts of the Donbas, which are internationally recognised as part of Ukraine. The conflict had included the Russian annexation of Crimea (2014), the Donbas War (2014–present), naval incidents, cyberwarfare, and political tensions. After Russian military buildups near Ukraine's borders in 2021. Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on  Feb. 24,  2022

President Biden nominates Ketanji Brown Jackson for the U.S. Supreme Court with support from Ohio's Democratic Congressional Delegation, namely U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, and U.S. Representatives Marcy Kaptur, Joyce Beatty, Shontel Brown, and Tim Ryan

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Democratic President Joe Biden, who ousted incumbent Republican president Donald Trump to take the White House in 2020, has fulfilled his campaign promise of nominating a Black woman for the U.S. Supreme Court, the president on Friday publicly announcing that he has chosen U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to possibly replace the retiring Justice Stephen Bryer on the nine-member court.

The president said in a White House press statement that Jackson is “one of the nation’s brightest legal minds,” and that she is “wise, and pragmatic, and has a deep understanding of the Constitution as an enduring charter of liberty, much like Breyer."

The president called the judge to personally tell her she would be nominated and she responded, 'I'm honored" Mr. president.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Jackson would become the nation's first Black female justice on a court were conservatives out number liberals like Justice Beyer Sonia Sotomayer and Elena Kagan, and the court awaits more cases ranging from abortion rights to redistricting, criminal justice reform, and property rights.

Jackson immediately gained the support of Ohio's Democratic Congressional Delegation, namely, U..S. Sen Sherrod Brown of Cleveland, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Betty of Columbus, 11th Congressional District Congresswoman Shontel Brown of greater Cleveland, and Congresspersons Marcy Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat, and Tim Ryan, a Niles Democrat and the front-runner for the Democratic nomination of U.S. senator to replace the retiring Rob Portman, a Cincinnati Republican

“As the first Black woman nominated to serve on the Court, as the daughter of a public school teacher, and as a former public defender, she brings with her a diverse set of experiences and perspectives that have long been lacking from our nation’s highest court,”  Sen. Brown said in a statement. “In the coming months and years, the Supreme Court is set to make decisions on everything from Ohioans’ health care to their workplace safety to their right to vote. As the Court makes these decisions that affect all Ohioans’ lives, I’m confident that Judge Jackson understands that equal justice and a commitment to our constitution requires standing up for civil rights, and standing up to powerful corporations on behalf of workers.”

Beatty described Judge Jackson as supremely qualified and said her selection would make "the bench look more like the make-up of our nation."

Congresswoman Brown, whose largely Black 11th congressional district includes Cleveland, was just as complimentary.

Brown lauded Jackson as having a "distinguished career, unparalleled integrity, and lifelong commitment to justice make her the perfect candidate to serve on the highest court in the land.”

A Harvard Law School graduate and former federal public defender who at one time served as a law clerk for Breyer, Jackson replaced current Merrick Garland as a U.S. Circuit  judge on the high-profile D.C. Court of Appeals when Biden tapped Garland as attorney general.

The judge, no doubt , has a distinguished resume.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson received her commission as a United States circuit judge in June of 2021. From 2013 until 2021, she served as a United States district judge, and until December of 2014, she also served as a vice chair and commissioner on the United States Sentencing Commission.

Jackson is currently a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Defender Services, as well as the Board of Overseers of Harvard University and the Council of the American Law Institute. She also currently serves on the board of Georgetown Day School and the United States Supreme Court Fellows Commission.

Judge Jackson received her degree cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1996. There she served as a supervising editor of the Harvard Law Review. She received an A.B., magna cum laude, in Government from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1992.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

By Joe Bialek

This letter is in response to the articles covering the the events leading up to the invasion
of Ukraine by Russia.

As a citizen of and believer in democracy, I applaud the efforts of the
Ukrainian people. Their efforts are similar to what is happening in many
other parts of the world.

Believe it or not, one thing that trumps capitalism and political
correctness in the United States is the right to have one's voice heard.
This is the foundation of which our democracy is built on. The Ukrainian
people should continue to defy Vladimir Putin's powerful armed forces
so that Ukrainian democracy can continue to thrive. It is unfortunate that
the
United States compromised on one of its most fundamental values in order to
protect its economic interests in Eastern Europe; something that happens all
too often domestically as well.  It is not the Ukrainian people that are
attempting to expand NATO power but rather it is Vladimir Putin who has
engaged in intimidation to prevent the will of the people from being heard.
Why else would he stoop to such underhanded tactics to block various means
of communication among the citizens of Ukraine?  Why is Russia returning
to the Cold War utilizing such political strong-arm tactics as the threat of
violence?

Vladimir Putin, you have had over twenty years to acknowledge Ukraine and
have failed them by your own choosing. The days of the despotic regime are
finally
coming to an end as it appears the desire for freedom will continue to sweep
among the East European nations. Accordingly, let the call go forth among
all citizens of Ukraine that your brothers and sisters of democracy from all
over the world are with you during every trial and tribulation you may
encounter during this crisis. To the people of Ukraine, the trumpet of
freedom beckons you to rise in protest and ensure your voice to preserve
your sacred heritage, promote your children's future and obtain the
blessings of liberty we all cherish.

Ukraine, the hour of your redemption is at hand. As you the rightful
citizens move forward to reclaim your own country, rise and strike! In the
name of those who were murdered fighting for everyone's rights, rise and
strike! To push back this evil regime, rise and strike! Let no one
continue to fear this man. Let every Ukrainian be strong and fight on for
their freedom. Rise and strike!

Vladimir Putin, no Borsch for you little weasel...let Ukraine go!
