Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb and Police Chief Wayne Drummond this week announced the results of "Operation Clean Sweep" – a multi-week operation aimed at removing individuals wanted for violent and other crimes from the streets of Cleveland. The Cleveland Division of Police partnered with multiple local, state, and federal agencies including US Marshals and the office of the Cuyahoga County sheriff, to arrest 56 individuals, ages 15 to 63, with felony warrants throughout the City.

"My administration's top priority has been, currently is, and always will be ensuring the safety of our community," said Mayor Bib, the city's fourth Black mayor. "This operation is the latest example of the power of partnerships – something we've been focused on leveraging ever since launching my RISE initiative. We are greater when we work together, and our community is safer as a result."

Between November 28-and Dec. 20, the operation purportedly netted 56 arrests for the following alleged crimes:

  • 15 for Felonious Assault Shootings

  • 6 for Murder

  • 6 for Grand Theft-Motor Vehicle / Aggravated Arson / Aggravated Menacing

  • 6 for Drug Trafficking

  • 5 for Aggravated Robbery / Carjacking

  • 5 for Domestic Violence / Strangulation

  • 5 on Federal and/or State Parole Violations

  • 4 for Aggravated Burglary

  • 2 for Rape / Kidnapping

  • 2 for Weapons Violations

"The Division of Police is consistently working to maintain the safety and security of our community," said Chief Drummond. "As a direct result of this operation we conducted, we were able to arrest many wanted fugitives in the city of Cleveland. This operation reflects the commitment and hard work our dedicated members do each day, working alongside our local, state and federal partners to remove these dangerous fugitives off our streets."

"Operation Clean Sweep" is the latest example of Mayor Bibb's RISE Initiative in action – the most comprehensive violence reduction and law enforcement enhancement plan the city has ever seen. RISE is a portfolio of multiple key investments, partnerships and enforcement strategies, technological advancements, and other Administration-led efforts announced over the summer to combat high levels of crime and to improve recruitment and retention within the Division, as it's experiencing staffing shortages that are reflective of police departments across the nation.

Since then, the Bibb administration hosted the city's first-ever Public Safety Summit announcing a 50% pay increase, $5,000 sign-on bonuses, fast-tracked promotions, and other marked improvements for cadets that resulted in a 45% volume increase in Q3 applications; has increased pay up to 25% for current officers, including a substantial pay increase in October that made the Division's top patrol officers the highest paid among the largest cities in the state; and raised the maximum age to become a police officer and hosted an expedited hiring event last month to streamline the application process, which resulted in over 600 Q4 applications.

Other recent RISE efforts led by the Bibb administration include expanding the City's SAFE SMART CLE camera sharing program; expanding ShotSpotter technology to all five neighborhood police districts; a new partnership with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department to enhance safety downtown; and expanded partnerships with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the U.S. Marshals Service, and other agencies at all levels for additional resources and personnel towards targeted hotpots and coordinated violence reduction tactics.

The mayor said that these strategic efforts have produced significant, tangible results including hundreds of arrests, hundreds of gun seizures, hundreds of dangerous pills and other drug seizures, dozens of stolen vehicle recoveries, and several lives being saved. The number of cameras integrated through the SAFE SMART CLE program has increased by nearly 400, and the number of cameras registered has gone up by more than 700 – more than a 1,000% increase since the program expanded in July. The Administration continues to urge residents, businesses, and community partners to sign up.

"Operation Clean Sweep" was led by the Cleveland Division of Police including the NICE Unit, Criminal Gang Intelligence and Gang Impact Units, District Violence Crime Reduction Teams, Traffic Unit, K-9 Unit, Chopper Unit, Real Time Crime Center, District Vice Unit, Community Service Units, Cartel Gang Narcotics & Laundering Task Force, Fugitive Unit, Safe Streets Gang Task Force, Narcotics Unit, and SWAT Unit. The Division collaborated with various partners that included the U.S. Marshals and their Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Those interested in becoming a police officer with the Cleveland Division of Police should contact the Department of Public Safety Recruitment Team at (216)-623-5233.

Trump denounces Ohio Gov Mike DeWine's veto of anti-transgender House Bill 68, saying he has 'fallen to the radical left'.... Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio applauded the governor's veto....By Clevelandurbannews.com

Former President Donald Trump

Staff article

Ohio-Former President Donald Trump blasted Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Saturday for his veto of Ohio House Bill 68 on Friday, legislation that would have banned critical gender-affirming health care for minors and precluded transgender student-athletes from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. And he says he wants nothing more to do with DeWine, a falling out of sorts between the two powerful Republicans as Ohio's Republican primary nears with Trump the current national front-runner for the Republican nomination for president.

DeWine vetoed the controversial legislation that drew protests statewide despite its overwhelming passage by Ohio's Republican-dominated state legislature. In addition to banning child sex changes, the legislation also prohibited biological males from competing in women’s sports.

The former president posted the following statement against Ohio's Republican governor on the social media site Truth Social:

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

DeWine has fallen to the Radical Left. No wonder he gets loudly booed in Ohio every time I introduce him at Rallies, but I won’t be introducing him any more. I’m finished with this “stiff.” What was he thinking. The bill would have stopped child mutilation, and prevented men from playing in women’s sports. Legislature will hopefully overturn. Do it FAST!!!

Trump's opposition to DeWine over the issue, which has also caught the attention of some key right-wing Republicans in Ohio and elsewhere who supported the legislation, is contrary to the position taken by some prominent and more liberal Democrats in Ohio such as Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, who released the following statement on Friday in support of the governor's veto.

"Ohioans have spoken loud and clear – they don't want the government involved in their personal, private health care decisions," said state Sen. Antonio, a Lakewood Democrat who's 23rd district includes 14 of Cleveland's 17 wards. "Parents should have the right to make important physical and mental health care decisions for their children. I applaud the governor for exercising due diligence and discernment in making the decision to veto House Bill 68, which would have taken away the rights of parents. I want to thank the thousands of advocates, kids, parents, religious and business leaders who spoke out against this dangerous bill – this veto belongs to you. The fight for LGBTQ+ equal rights will continue until all may enjoy the freedom to live their authentic lives without government interference."

Whether Ohio's GOP dominated state legislature will seek to overturn the veto remains to be seen, given that the governor broke from his party and vetoed the legislation. Gov. DeWine said via a press conference on Friday that decisions about gender-affirming care should be left to families and their doctors.

Trump booted from Maine's state ballot after Colorado's ruling that disqualified him from its state primary ballot...By Clevelandurbannews.com, Ohio's Black digital news leader

Former President Donald Trump

By Kathy Wray Coleman, editor

MAINE- Former President Donald Trump has been booted from another state primary ballot following a ruling last week by the Colorado Supreme Court that says his candidacy in the state's primary next year is prohibited on constitutional grounds.

This time the state of Maine is at the helm and state officials there, specifically Secretary of State Sheena Bellows, say he engaged in insurrection and that such behavior disqualify's him from seeking the presidency for a third time. Her decision to remove the former president's name from the ballot following administrative review, which is permitted under state law, is on hold pending an appeal, which the Trump campaign has promised.

Bellows told reporters that she did what the law required her to do and that her decision is in cooperation with "the constitution and Maine election law." She says she has since received threats and that she is concerned for her safety and the safety of those around her, including family members and security personnel.

Challenges in a few other states, some of them still pending, have proven unsuccessful and legal sources say that the Colorado ruling has opened the floodgates for other states like Maine to follow, notwithstanding an ultimate decision on the controversial matter by the US Supreme Court in Trump's favor.

A lower Colorado court ruled that while Trump engaged in insurrection via the Jan 6 Capitol riot it did not disqualify him from the state primary ballot, but the state's highest court saw otherwise.

"A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution," the ruling said. "Because he is disqualified, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Colorado Secretary of State to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot.”

The Colorado Supreme Court decision, however, is stayed until Jan. 4 to allow for further appeals.

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump's campaign, blasted the Colorado ruling and said that an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is forthcoming. Trump has never been charged with insurrection relative to the Jan 6 Capitol riot, much less convicted, his supporters say, though his opponents say a conviction is not required under the 14th Amendment provision at issue, section three in fact.

“Unsurprisingly, the all-Democrat appointed Colorado Supreme Court has ruled against President Trump, supporting a Soros-funded, left-wing group’s scheme to interfere in an election on behalf of crooked Joe Biden by removing President Trump’s name from the ballot and eliminating the rights of Colorado voters to vote for the candidate of their choice," Cheung said in a statement.

He added that "we have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these un-American lawsuits."

The Colorado Republican Party has also joined in, filing an appeal and asking the US Supreme Court to hear the case and reverse the Colorado Supreme Court decision.

How the conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court will rule if it takes on the Colorado case remains to be seen.
