CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM, CLEVELAND, Ohio-Cavaliers power forward LeBron James (pictured) has been named the 2016 Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated, an honor that comes after the megastar last season brought Cleveland its first professional sports championship title in 52 years.

He will behonored during a ceremony in Brooklyn, New York later this month.

James, 31, has won three NBA championshipS and is a four-time MVP.

Sports Illustrated officials said he was chosen not only because of his work on the court but also because of his charitable contributions.

A native of Akron, Ohio, James averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the 2015-2016 season, and under the leadership of head coach Tyronn Lue, who, like James, is Black.

The Cavaliers overcame the Golden State Warriors to take the national championship last season, a year after losing to Golden State in the NBA Finals.

The Cavaliers have a 13-4 regular season record to date this season, and they won against the  Los Angeles Clippers at home on Thursday, 113-94.
