CLEVELAND URBAN NEWS.COM, CLEVELAND, Ohio- Former Cleveland NAACP president Michael Nelson Sr. (pictured), who gave up the post last year to run for a seat on the 13-member largely Black Cleveland Municipal Court, will be sworn in on Tuesday, Dec 19, 2017 at 4:30 pm in chambers of Cleveland City Council on Lakeside Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
A reception will follow.
For more information call (216) 505-0204 or email mikenelsonforjudge@gmail.com.
Nelson, 68 and a Cleveland criminal defense attorney, won in the November general election over Judge Michael Sliwinski, who was appointed by Gov John Kasich to an unexpired term to fill the vacancy left by the death of former Cleveland judge Ed Wade.
Though the judicial race at issue was non-partisan, Nelson, who is Black, is a Democrat, and Slinwinski, who is White, is a Republican.
Cleveland has a population of roughly 385,000 people and is a largely Black major American city.
Nelson is newly remarried, having remarried his ex-wife, the mother of his grown children, earlier this month.
His term is for six years as are all of the terms on the municipal bench of Cleveland and he cannot seek reelection because he will be over 70, the age limit for Ohio judges to serve, unless they are full filling a term that expires after they reach 70-years of age.
